WHO Bread goes acoustic

Bread1

How's all the WHO bread doing out there? I'm thrilled you're trying it and liking it. One very important thing I forgot to mention when I posted the recipe - you have to say WHOOOOOO Bread - like an owl. You just have to - it's a rule (my children say so).

A lot of you asked for a non-bread machine version of the recipe, and I'm happy to tell you that we have one! Allison from In A Nutshell sent along her translation, and was gracious enough to let me share it here with you, too. In her words:

WHO Bread - acoustic style
(bread machine recipe here)

1 1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons butter @ room temperature
1 tsp salt
3 cups of flour (we do 2 cups unbleached white, 1 cup whole wheat pastry)
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (or, one package)

Pour 1 1/4c. warm water (about 110 degrees F), honey, sugar, and yeast into a bowl. Whisk until well combined and mixture is frothy. Set aside to proof while you mix together the other ingredients.

In a separate large bowl stir together, flour, butter, salt, rolled oats, and cinnamon.

Pour yeast mixture into flour mixture, and mix until thoroughly combined. (I like to do this with my hands.)

Place dough into a lightly oiled bread pan. Cover with a damp towel and leave in a warm spot to rise for about an hour (45 min. if you’re impatient!). Punch down dough and let rise a second time for 45 minutes, covered with a damp towel.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Remove towel from top of dough and place pan in the center of your oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Done!

Thank you Allison!

We gave it a go yesterday, and it was indeed yummy and light and quite fun to make. Adelaide thought it was worthy enough of a bread-with-tea party. Though I did have a toss-up between what I wanted to eat more - the bread or the baby.

I mean, seriously.

so glad for that! (we're a bread-machine-less family) i look forward to trying it.

We have been having WHO bread around here. With soup. Mmmm... And sometimes with honey. The boys think the WHO bead is what they eat in WHOville...as in Dr. Seuss referrence. Which I love. I do miss the kneading though, so this is just great. Great bread for all. Those times that you are in a rush, but want to give their family good bread. And those times where you have the time to do it all by hand. Thank you!

Perfect for a tea party:-)

Yay! Thank you--been wanting to try it! (I gave away my bread machine a while back.)

Ohh, thanks for that. I too was waiting for the 'hands-on' version.

We tried this bread recipe for the first time last weekend and yes, it was DELICIOUS. (Thank you for sharing it.) The best part, of course, was telling the kids that we were making WHO bread and seeing their eyebrows go up in response. They were...intrigued.

Also, we ending up going half electric/half acoustic on our first batch because the local 3-year-old pulled the cord on the bread machine after the first rising. :)

Awesome! We've wanted to try it out since you mentioned it!
But with our move across the seas we have lost" our bread machine [US plug + European outlet = bad combo]. Thanks a lot for sharing..
Happy tea party to Adelaide.

Hello, I feel a bit like a stalker as i feel i share so much of your life and you have no idea who i am!I stummbled upon your blog bout a year ago and love to catch up on you beautiful lives when my own babes are snoozing. I can hardly wait till the postman comes knocking at my door with your book in hand, ooo I'm sooo excited! Now Whoooo bread! I am truely addicted as is the extended family who keep reciving loaves on their doorsteps. the precious 2year old loves being the bread santa, wrapping it up pretty with a mysterious note. Our new addition which has force a name change to Whoona bread includes a half cup of sultanas YUM! Thanks for all you share xox Jac

Ah cool! Was wondering how that would work acoustic (great word).

Adelaide = cutie pie!

Whooo-hoooo!
Thanks Allison and Amanda for sharing.
Looks like some acoustic baking shall be taking place Today!!
I'm swooning over your little tea party, those don't happen here.... boys. Maybe one day....

The hair!! Where did all that hair come from?

Life needs more teaparties, I say!

B

Yea Allison! We get to make Whooo! Bread today. Bella has been bugging me to make some bread this morning, now here's a quick and easy one to satisfy! Thank you (to both of you) for sharing it. Adelaide looks so sweet being " mommy " to her dolly.

that's it. now I am going to buy some yeast for sure! And, I would have battled the bread vs. baby dilemma myself.

Oh she has hair in a pony tail!! Oh girly things happening - soon she'll want rhinestones and bracelets accessories :D

YAY! Very cute picture of the babe. Is her hair clipped up in the last picture? Wohoo!

ive never commented before...i kinda figured that once you got to 100 or so comments, you may not read them. but then i thought, actually, you're lovely, you probably would. and then i thought, she's hella busy being an awesome mum! as if she has time to read comments...

and now, all i have to say is, when did this happen? when was it possible for adelaide to have big girl hair??

we make and eat that bread every week. Gosh, Adelaide is sure growing up!
Christina

Thanks for the non bread machine recipe. I decided against buying a bread machine right now. I'm going to try making bread the original way. :)

The WHO bread was a huge hit with my girlies, came out great - though my husband had a taste sensation with his cinnamony ham sandwiches he'd made and taken to work ;) Great stuff ..

I am going to make this over the weekend, I cant wait! Adelaide has a "becky" in her hair! My daughter used to call a pony tail of any kind a becky. :) She is getting so big, Amanda!

a hair dooooo!!!

look at the ponytail!!!!! i just love the way the dolls are "relaxing" on their blankets with their bread and teacups strewn nearby. so sweet.

i made my first WHO bread last week. i think i ate most of it- i'm hoping to win the kids over by making it every week!!!

We have the same tea-set and we're going to have to try that WHO Bread to put on the plates. We love owls over here, so the sound effect will go over well!- Lauren

Eeps! Look at the tiniest of tiny hair clips! That is too adorable. Definitely a munchable little neck.

I love little tiny ponytails with those little wisps of hair. I just put my daughter's hair in the silliest little water-fountainish antennae and it makes me smile every time I look at her. :)

I too tried the WHO bread....well almost. It seems there was no H to be found in my house so I had to improvise! I added in extra brown sugar and threw in some ground flaxseed. Thanks for such a great basic recipe! I might try adding banana, dried fruit or nuts next.

hello, just wanted to say we have been enjoying the WHOOO bread-even our picky 2 1/2 year old daughter loves it. thanks for sharing & inspiring me to finally dust off my bread machine & start using it again.

Well, I made the WHO bread twice so far... first time, turned out great. Second time, I am not sure what I did wrong, it sort of "deflated" and was too squishy and almost impossible to cut. I wasn't able to get it out of the bread machine immediately, perhaps that was the problem? Or maybe I added a bit too much yeast?

It is delicous though, great recipe. :)

Definitely the baby.

Thanks! The little post in my bread machine broke off the day you posted the WHO recipe...and I've been missing fresh-baked bread!
Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks for sharing the "accoustic" version, I am a non-breadmachine baker as well. I am a big owl fan, so this should be fun w/ the lil' royals. They both are getting over a tummy bug, and sometimes nice warm bread is such a treat!

So sweet; the tea party, the dress and tights, the little hair-do.

Your children are beautiful!

Isn't it funny how we have this inclination to "eat" things that are unbearably cute? She is just too adorable.

thanks for the acoustic version. i was inspired and tried to make it "free hand" using the bread machine recipe. It was edible, but this version will be shared tonight with my little ones and good friends coming for dinner. Thank you!

I can't wait for your book to come in the mail! I SO love your blog. Thank you for your inspiration and honesty.

It looks seriously yummy!!
I haven't eaten bread for years, but I must admit to being really tempted to try this one!!

Well, since my birthday is April 2, I just pre-ordered your book as a birthday present for my soon-to-be-30-year-old-self. ;-) Can't wait!

My family tried the bread recipe and adapted it to the oven also. It was so good! It works well also for french toast a day later! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

yum, baby elbow dimples...mmmmmm

Yay! I've been wanting to try your WHO bread but we are without a bread machine and I didn't know how to convert the recipe. Guess what we'll be having for lunch on Saturday :)

i will definitely have to try this now- i'm in the no bread machine club as well. so i'm so thankful someone took the time to convert this recipe. thanks!

oh, i would definitely eat her up. the ponytail is killing me!

ps. when i saw the title, i thought maybe you crazy soule's had a video out about how much you love the who bread ;)

Thanks for the translation. Sweet baby!

Oh I'm so glad to see the by hand Who bread recipe, I was wanting to try it and also to be inspired to make something other than no-knead bread for the first time in a while.
Also thank you for reminding me to get on the kitchen and tea set project for my daughter who's just getting into that kind of play.

WHOOOO bread is popular over here, too! Unfortunately I have to stick with the machine because the oven in our (rented) flat just isn't up to bread baking temperature-wise :-(
Isn't it great how so many people can "get together" in blogsphere over such delighful things as bread and cute little girls? We have a little boy who isn't quite big enough for tea parties yet but he loves the bread already!

You will be amused to know that your WHO post inspired me to grovel locally for a freecycled bread machine! We got one but I have a newbie-without-instruction-manual question: do I put the wet stuff in first or the dry stuff? Any other generic bread machine tips? Thanks...

I have been LOVING the Who Bread! I have been making it in my bread machine which I was not in love with before. We are now currently working on our relationship thanks to your "Who" recipe! I have added fresh cut up dates to it a couple of times and it was wonderful too!

Thank you! I was just about to request that recipe - how many more yummy/cozy pictures could I drool over and not make it? I'm machine-less. Sweet baby girl, I just want to snuggle her-up! She does look like a "big" girl in that last photo...(sigh)
